Steven Frearson, a versatile sculptor, whose artistic journey has been as meaningful and as interesting as his creations. Using clay and cold cast bronze, he breathes life into nature's wonders, infusing his philosophical outlook with a profound appreciation for the thoughts of great minds.
Steven's passion for sculpting began during his school days, where he excelled in art and design, particularly in clay sculpture. Despite achieving an impressive A in GCSE art, life led him on a diverse path—from serving as a Royal Marines Commando in various global regions, including Afghanistan, Iraq, Sierra Leone, Brunei and Norway. Later, he ventured into roles such as working on advanced life support ambulances in South Africa, close protection officer in Iraq and a Maritime security officer on the Indian ocean and Arabian sea. To his current role as a crane supervisor in the North of England. These varied experiences, often close to nature, have significantly shaped his perspective on art and life.
His life brought him full circle when he rediscovered his passion for sculpting during the UK lockdown, Steven dedicated his newfound free time to crafting meaningful works of art. Now balancing his current role as a crane supervisor, and more recently, as a father in the North of England, he is determined to transform his passion into a fulfilling career.
From operating in high-stress, hostile environments to the serene and tranquil setting of the Lake District. This shift has not been without its challenges, yet Steven has discovered a profound sense of peace by channeling the discipline and precision acquired during his military career into the meditative process of sculpting. His journey reflects the transformative power of art, where the therapeutic nature of his current craft stands in stark contrast to his previous professional roles. This unique evolution not only showcases his adaptability but also infuses his sculptures with a depth and empathy that resonates with audiences.
Steven's sculpting process is meticulous. He selects subjects or philosophies that resonate with him, drawing inspiration from his extensive book collection and life experiences. Employing a blend of store-bought steel ball tools and ingenious homemade instruments crafted from guitar strings, he sculpts with precision capturing the essence of his subjects.
Beyond his artistic endeavors, Steven is an avid reader, exploring the wisdom of old philosophers and collecting meaningful quotes and proverbs. Inspired by these timeless words, he aspires to infuse his sculptures with deeper meaning, creating thought-provoking pieces that appeal to all.
